artist Statement
In our modern culture of mass produced commodities, fast fashion, and a decline in quality craftsmanship, my interest as an artist lies in keeping handcraft alive by creating meticulously handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces of art jewelry. Originally on track to become an architect, I unexpectedly became enthralled in the world of handmade jewelry during college and graduated with a BFA in jewelry and metalsmithing from Maine College of Art in 1994. Since then, I have dedicated my career to excellence in the craft, focusing on traditional fabrication, metal sculpting, stone setting, and wax carving.
My artistic inspiration draws from over twenty-five years of service in restoring antique, historical, and museum jewelry pieces. This work has shaped my aesthetic toward the beauty found in small details and old world craftsmanship. I am particularly inspired by jewelry created in the Art Nouveau, Etruscan, Renaissance Revival, and Art Deco eras.
As an educator, my goal is to impart what I have learned in over thirty years of devoted study and experimentation in the creation of fine jewelry. Passing down the notion of the importance of excellent craftsmanship and innovative techniques in jewelry is my mission, and I hope you’ll join me at the bench to share this passion.
about the studio
My studio is located in the scenic woods of Gray, Maine. The setting is rural and quiet, with occasional wildlife visitors, and is the perfect place to unplug and focus on refining your skills. Each student will work at their own fully equipped professional jeweler’s bench. Group classes are small, with a maximum of four students.
